“In this series, I juxtapose our treatment of endangered crocodiles and whales with images of saints and nuns.
The subliminal message I was trying to communicate is that we should not be arbitrary and imperious about our fellow creatures. To make my point I use religious figures to symbolically address the traits of our better selves which include humaneness, respect, etc..
Within this series there are many drawings of whales and alligators. The whale’s brain is 6 1/2 times the size of the human brain. Still the whale is being destroyed to make products like soap and cat food. The shark has existed for 200 million years. Its population has decreased by 90%. Fins are removed from its body and it is allowed to drown. Dolphins and manta rays are also being targeted. The reason is the insatiable appetite in China for shark fin soup.
The alligator is actually a dinosaur. It has withstood several mass extinctions. The proto alligator existed 300 million years ago. Today we steal its eggs and raise it in small tanks, then we club it to death, gouge out its eyes, skin it, and use its flesh for “delicacies”. We then sell its 5-digit appendages and skull as souvenirs.”
